It’s no secret that Chris Harris is about as pure a petrolhead as you can get. He’s not only owned some of the greatest cars on the planet, but has written for the greatest car magazines and websites this side of the Atlantic ocean. Because of this, when Harris releases a video whether it be on the Top Gear YouTube channel or Collecting Cars who he’s also involved with, we watch it.
His latest video reunites him with his old Lotus Exige S1, which he drove for a year while writing for Autocar and racing back in 2002. The man he sold it to, now twenty years later, is selling it again, so before it’s put live on Collecting Cars, Harris thought he’d get reacquainted with the old flame.
The first half of the video allows Harris to show us around the British sportscar, explaining that he blew up its first engine. It’s identical to the day he sold it, announces Chris, including the Pi dashboard, stone chips. and a Nurburgring sticker.
The Top Gear presenter then took. to the roads oh does it sound lovely!
The presenter smiles as he turns the key before telling us that it’s been twenty years since he last drove it, but still retains the muscle memory.
“I would sacrifice so much of modern cars’ outright performance, all that speed, to have the way this feels.
“The way that I feel bolted to the floor of the car, that gorgeous steering, that tiny accurate gearshift, a throttle pedal that takes a push, the brake pedal that takes a push.”
“I often talk about control weights needing to feel like they’re in sync with each other, that they communicate with each other.
“The Elise, Exige, is the perfect example of that.”
It’s safe to say Chris likes the car, and if you like it, too, then pop over to Collecting Cars where it will be up for auction soon.
