Jeremy Clarkson Defends Himself After Being Blamed For Ruining British Landmark
While presenting for Top Gear and The Grand Tour, it’s no secret that Jeremy Clarkson and his fellow presenters Richard Hammond and James May have seen some of the best routes and experiences countries around the world have to offer. But despite the trio being well-experiences globe trotters, they’ve always talked about their appreciation for the UK and what it has to offer.
But now, Clarkson is being blamed for the increased interest at the Cheddar Gorge, Somerset, so he’s written his defence in his usual column, beginning with the fact he’s never actually driven around the area in either Top Gear or The Grand Tour.
He wrote the following for The Sun:
“Somerset locals are spitting tacks, saying that the picturesque Cheddar Gorge is now filled, round the clock, with boy racers zooming around at high speed in their souped-up cars.
“And a local climber called Matt Helliker reckons he knows exactly who’s to blame.”
Jeremy added that while he did go there during The Grand Tour, he didn’t drive. He continued, quoting the climber:
“‘I think Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear team, who regularly used the gorge to showcase cars, have something to do with the problem,’ he said.”
One slight problem with this argument, though, Matt.
“In all of my time on Top Gear, I never once filmed in the gorge.
“Four or five years ago, I went with The Grand Tour but only to stand there eating some cheese.”
Jeremy, Richard, and James are now filming for the next episode of The Grand Tour as they drive three rally-bred cars around Norway and into Finland. Jeremy is behind the wheel of an Audi RS4, James a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 which he reportedly crashed, and Richard a Subaru Impreza.
