After months of waiting, Tesla has finally revealed the Cybertruck and… Wow. Was not expecting that! But if the Tesla is not to your taste, what else is in the pipeline?
We’ve put together a list of everything we know regarding the future of the pickup truck. And guess what? It’s looking electric.
Speculation of the GM electric pickup truck.
Currently there are only rumours of plans of GM building an all-electric pickup, but according to Reuters, GM CEO Mary Barra allegedly said that an electric GM is coming in 2021. She said the following regarding this:
“General Motors understands truck buyers and … people who are new coming into the truck market,” said Barra, according to Reuters. “It will be a very capable truck, I’m pretty excited about it.”
We did an article on this truck when ford announced a $500 million dollar investment into the company. Well, the R1T has a projected release date of 2020. This mid-sized pickup has three battery packs starting at 105kWh with a 135kWh and 180kWh pack upgrades available. Range sits at 230, 300 and 400 miles respectively.
Like most trucks in this feature, the R1T has all-wheel drive and can tow a respectable 11,00lbs. With prices starting around $69,000, it is quite a bit more than the starting price of Tesla’s Cybertruck of $39,900. But time will tell if the R1T will own the road.
Not only is this the largest new electric truck on the way but also, at the time of writing, the Bollinger B2 is the most expensive. And you can see why. First and foremost its enormous, seriously this thing is gigantic. It has a gross vehicle weight of 10,00lbs, making it a Class 3 truck according to the government.
Because of this, the B2 gets away with no airbags. In addition, the B2 gets locking differentials, front and rear disconnecting sway bars, and up to 20-inches of ground clearance, meaning it should be insane off-road.
But don’t go too far off-road, because despite its 120.0kWh battery pack, the B2 has a limited range of only 200 miles. It does however have 641horsepower and 668ft-lb of torque, meaning it can surely move mountains.
Now, back to the price of this behemoth: It starts at $125,000. Bollinger is currently taking deposits for the B2 with production slated for the second half of 2020.
Ford F-150 Electric
This is one of the most anticipated trucks on this list. Why? Because Ford’s F-150 has been the best-selling truck in America for decades, and slated to debut when Ford updates the F-150 to its next generation, hopefully some time in 2021.
Ford has already boasted about the tow capacity with a video of it towing a train, and then with it towing the same train loaded with F-150s. Here’s the video.
Currently, Ford has not shared any specs of its upcoming truck, so we don’t know what it will look like yet, either. But we wait patiently to find out.
First thing’s first, you either love the styling of this truck or you hate it. There is no in between. Tesla wants consumers to forget everything they know about pickup trucks, and with its retro-futuristic styling, we can say job-done. But that’s not the only convention out the window, because according to Tesla themselves, it’s also scratch proof, dent proof, and bulletproof…?
However, with stats like a tow rating of 14,00lbs and a range of up to 500 miles, the Cybertruck would be more capable than the current crop of ICE trucks and have the longest range on the market.
The Cybertruck also has some impressive stats to its name such as a 0-60mph of 2.9 seconds and adjustable suspension, maxing out the ride-height at 16-inches. The big takeaway on the Cybertruck is not the looks or the range, it’s the price, starting at just $39,000 for the single-motor rear wheel drive model. This is a good starting price maxing out around $69,000 for the three motor all-wheel drive model.
The final truck on our list is a bit of a newcomer, having just bought the Lordstown plant from General Motors earlier this month. It also beat Tesla’s pre-order opening, launching pre-orders for its new truck just hours before the reveal the Cybertruck – maybe not such a good idea.
For a $1,000 deposit you can put on-hold an Endurance, which is intended for fleet and business use. Currently there are few known details about the truck. We don’t know the range, what the battery pack will be, or ground clearance. What we do know is that it will have a four-wheel-drive “hub motor” system. Production of the Endurance is supposed to start at the end of 2020 with deliveries following shortly after.
Who will come out on top?
Time will certainly tell who will be the king of all-electric trucks. With the Cybertruck already reaching monumental numbers of pre-orders, it will certainly push the market.

Rivian has a shot and will certainly have a stamp on the market despite its high price. However, the styling is a lot more modern-realistic. And with a range of 400 miles, that’s still pretty high for an electric pickup. Ford has the customer base, but with such a late start, will have to play catch-up.
Honestly, I don’t know about the Bollinger B2 and the Lordstown Endurance. They’re both unknown compared to the former three, and therefore demand a high price, regardless of their performance.
The jury is out on all-electric pickups, but with so many coming to the market from high profile manufacturers, we’re sure they will start to infiltrate the market more than we expect, especially taking into account the love for these high-riding vehicles in America.
They can’t role coal, but maybe the insane torque and planet-friendly powertrain will persuade consumers. The thing is, how can you persuade someone to now buy a Ford F-150? Maybe the Cybertruck’s out there looks could topple the monopoly.
