The Best Cars From Goodwood Festival Of Speed

Goodwood Festival of Speed is always a weekend to behold. The greatest of motoring technologies meets the most legendary and historic in a swarm of revving engines, Castrol Oil, and tyre smoke. This year, we were joined by whirring electric motors and, as a first for FOS, autonomy. So here are our picks for the greatest cars at Goodwood Festival of Speed.

VOLKSWAGEN ID R

Setting the fastest time at GoodwoodFOS is not a feat to laugh at. It takes a fast car, skill, and big balls. With a time of 43.86 seconds, it comes third overall behind the Gould GR51 and the McLaren MP4/13 and first this year. The VW recently showed its performance at Pikes Peak, beating the record by a ridiculous 15 seconds. Armed with electric motors, maybe they are the way forward?

TOYOTA SUPRA

While this may be turning into the next NSX with a teaser time of years, it was great to see the car in action, albeit in camouflage. Toyota insists that it will be released net year, let’s just hope that it’s not too much Z4 and not enough Supra, but only time will tell.

MCLAREN 600LT

What happens when you grab a McLaren 570S and stuff an extra 30bhp down its throat, take away some weight, and add some aerodynamic magic? You get the 600LT, a car that’s faster than the Ferrari 488GTB and on some tracks, faster than its 675LT big brother.

ROBORACE DEVBOT

See that space where the driver sits? Me neither. That’s because it’s completely autonomous and was the first autonomous vehicle to drive the hill climb without any external help. And you know what? It was pretty fast, too. It boasts an electric powertrain and state of the art autonomous technology, its makers are hoping to make a racing series out of this concept.

ASTON MARTIN CYGNET V8

Aston Martin are crazy folk, aren’t they? They’ve stuffed the V8 from the Vantage S into the tiny little chassis of what was originally a Toyota IQ. Then they slaughtered the hill climb with its thunderous bespoke exhaust system and rear-wheel drive powertrain.

POLESTAR 1

Volvo wants to show everyone that not only can they do extremely reliable and comfortable cars, but they can also do extremely fast and powerful weapons. This is the Polestar 1, the first car from Volvo’s performance and electrification brand. It boasts 600hp from its high-tech hybrid powertrain which consists of a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine and efficient electric motors. I think it’s safe to say that we’re very excited to see how Polestar progresses.

Shelby Cobra Daytona

Technology is great. But every once in a while we have to return to something less electric and more brutal. This is my personal favourite, the Shelby Cobra Daytona. A mix of British light-weight, American powertrain, and aerodynamic trickery, this was a real car to compete with back in the day. And just listen to it! How can you not fall in love with that burble?

Alex Harrington

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: alex@grandtournation.com
