A Reddit user has put their photoshop skills to work by removing the halo safety device from the 2022 Red Bull and Ferrari F1 cars. It’s safe to say, they look very weird without it. But first, what is the halo?
What Is The Halo Safety Device?
Introduced in 2018, the halo device became compulsory to all FIA-sanctioned open-cockpit class racing cars such as Formula E.
Simply put, it’s a protective frame that is put around the cockpit and the driver’s head to stop any damage being done if, for example, another car gets thrown towards the driver. It famously saved Lewis Hamilton’s life in 2021 as a collision with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen saw his car shoot over the top of the Mercedes. Hamilton’s head was kept safe by the lightweight, titanium barrier.
What If The 2022 Cars Didn’t Have A Halo?
A user on Reddit answered this question, so check out the embed below to see what the 2022 Ferrari and Red Bull cars would look like.
“They look even bigger without halo,” a user responded, referencing the fact that many fans weren’t happy with how large modern F1 cars have become.
“They’re basically fighter jets that don’t fly lol,” another added.
Another user wondered if it was the T-cam that made the car look so huge and busy:
“I think reducing the size of the T-cam, particularly the T-width of it, would also reduce the busy-ness around the cockpit and make it look a little cleaner.”
But one F1 fan reminded the forum that without the halo, the drivers look very open to the elements:
“They sure do look pretty exposed in there.
“I like the halos. I’ve grown quite fond of the look. And we got to keep Roman Grosjean in this world.
“Total success for the Halo imo.”
He quickly added the following after fellow commenters reminded him that Lewis was also saved by the device:
“Edit: Holy s**t I get it, Lewis Lewis Lewis Lewis Lewis. Pls stop,” they wrote.
