Catch This ’74 Pontiac Firebird Restomod At The Mecum Auctionblock
Any mention of a restomod comes with the obligatory naysayers, the “purists” that supposedly lurk around every corner. It’s as if you change some nuts and bolts on a classic, and the league old-farts will come poopoo you to death.
Well, I’m not reading comments on this post about the 1974 Firebird going to sale a Mecum auctions with modern goodies and ’71 Firebird Formula styling, and so I feel totally fine saying it’s WAY cooler than any O.G. Firebird.
For starters, it has a Katech LS3 V8 engine, with 566 horsepower and 512 lb-ft of torque. I’m no antique expert, but that sounds more powerful than whatever Firebirds came with back in the sepia days. Pair that with a Monster 4L70E transmission- wait… that’s automatic? How convenient!
Okay, enough of that. Now that we’ve cleared the room, we can talk some of these serious gizmos added to this gem.
It has forged Mahle pistons, a GM 10 bolt rear with Auburn Positraction, Moser axles and 3.08 gears. The owner’s fitted a BMR 4-link with torsion bar, QA1 upper and lower control arms, and 4-corner QA1 coilovers. Clearly this was a passion-project which begot the total attention of a devoted owner.
It doesn’t stop there either. The Firebird als has Wilwood disk brakes on all four wheels, an aluminium radiator with Derale fans, 3-inch stainless Pypes exhaust with coated Hedman headers, and a Coleman Racing aluminium driveshaft.
The interior’s pretty tricked out too, with Auto Meter gauges in a carbon fiber cluster, a Budnik steering wheel, Corbeau seats, and a B&M shifter. As far as wheels go, these may have come stock (I don’t know lol), the Firebird has a set of Foose Nitrous wheels.
So, if you’re in the market for an early 70s muscle-car restomod, look no further! There’s no telling what it will go for, when it goes for auction at the Indy 2020 July 10-18 Mecum event.
