2025 C9 Audi RS6 To Become Hybrid As It Potentially Loses Engine Displacement

The new 2025 C9 Audi RS6 will be a plug-in hybrid, according to Audi. The current RS6 embraces a mild 48-volt hybrid system, but it’s now been confirmed that the upcoming generation will have more focus on the hybrid implementation.

Talking to Wheels, head of Research and Development at Audi Sport, Stephan Reil said the following:

“Of course this [hybridization] is the way to go, in the next generation I can tell you it will have more hybridization,” he admitted. “This is our way toward fully electrified cars.”

Full details of the hybrid setup are yet to be revealed, but it’s likely that the combustion engine will be toned down, with this slack being taken up by a more powerful electric motor. It’s likely the engine could undergo rather noticeable downsizing too, following in the footsteps of Mercedes after they swapped out their 4.0-litre V8 for a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder alongside an electric motor. It’s already been established, after all, that Audi will stop combustion engine development in 2026.

“It started about a generation after C6 that CO2 emissions got more and more important,” Reil continued. “Then on the C7 we had the downsizing from a V10 to V8, we brought in cylinder deactivation, and on the C8 we now have a 48-volt mild hybrid system.”

There are still plenty of secrets being kept from fans of the car, but Reil gave us a little detail of what’s to come.

“The hybrid system, first of all means there are additional parts that need to be packaged to get into the car,” he said. “Then of course it gives you more possibilities in driving modes, and you can use the electrification on certain weak points of your combustion engine.”

There’s no doubt when I say the Audi RS6 will eventually be fully electric, with this likely being the aim of the C10 model which will likely arrive sometime in the 2030s. So with that in mind, it’s time to appreciate the engine you have if you’re currently the lucky owner of an Audi RS6.
