Mitsubishi Will No Longer Make Anything Apart From SUVs
The Evolution, the Eclipse, the 3000GT. Three cars made by Mitsubishi that will never be brought back. In fact, the only cars that Mitsubishi will be making from now on are going to be SUVs, as confirmed by the managing director of Mitsubishi UK; Robert Lindley.
“As a business that sells 1.2 million cars worldwide, in a global sense, it’s not a big business. If you try and be in all the different segments of the market and follow trends, like sports cars, it would be difficult to be economically viable,” Lindley said, on speaking to CarThrottle.
Now, the awful thing about this move is that it could actually work. Let’s face it, the everyday person doesn’t want to buy a turbocharged sports car. They want space, economy, reliability, and ease of driving. A turbocharged sports car can’t give you all of those things while an SUV may well be able to. Look at Jaguar for example. Jag’s best selling car is now the F-Pace SUV, and this is the only reason why Lamborghini, Aston Martin, and even Ferrari are following suit… Sales.
So will Mitsubishi find success with this new strategy? They more than likely will, but this doesn’t mean we have to agree with it. Plus, compared to companies like Land Rover who have plenty of money to push technology further and innovate, Mitsubishi may find this difficult with their smaller budgets. Will they be able to keep up with the hard hitters, then? We’ll have to wait and see.
