New Turbo Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ On The Way With 255BHP And New Name

The Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ have been a fan favourite since its inception in 2012. Its perfect balance and agility made up for its lack of power, but a torrent of aftermarket support has allowed the GT86/BRZ to be the perfect platform for high-powered builds. Now, both Japanese companies have revealed that a replacement is coming, based on the Toyota TNGA platform but with a Subaru powertrain.

This replacement will improve on both the GT86 and BRZ with a number of “substantial changes”, the most poignant being the possible move to a turbocharged 2.4-litre Boxer engine from Subaru’s Ascent. The cars’ balance, handling, and power will each be improved on, with the duo’s horsepower looking to increase from a spot over 200bhp to 255, plus a bump in torque, too, thank to a turbo. With the current cars producing 156lb-ft of torque and reaching 60mph in 7.6 seconds (manual variant), these improvements could see the sports car hitting low 6s or even 5s.

The cabin will get a number of improvements, too, with a host of better materials being used to up quality and finish, while an influx of new technology will keep the cars up to date compared to the current market.

Of course, these additions will come at a cost, with the second generation looking to be more expensive than the first. However, compared to that of the Audi TT, Cayman, and even Alpine A110, it will be much cheaper and offer a similar take on the thrill of driving.

One final change to the model lineup will be its name, with ‘GT86’ being altered to ‘GR86’, inline with Toyota’s new Gazoo Racing branding which is already being used by the Supra and new GR Yaris. Eventually, a hypercar will sit at the top of the GR food chain, but for now we’re already being spoilt with an incredible array of sports cars that, while maintaining a lower level of power than some, thrive on driving pleasure. Count us intrigued.

  1. Adding a mediocre factory turbo to appease the whiners who do not understand the purpose of the car was intended for the buyer to personalize the car with their own set up and mods. I prefer choosing my own upgrades thank you and definitely supercharger over turbo.
