Shelby Has Tuned The Mustang GT500 For A SEMA Reveal
It’s aways necessary to get excited when Shelby has been working on something new, and yep, it’s tie to get excited again. In readiness for the 2019 SEMA show, the Shelby wrenches have been turning on the new Ford Mustang GT500.
They’ve named it the Dragon Snake, and like its predecessor from the sixties, it’s aimed at drag fanatics, so we can expect that it’ll be more than able to go very fast down a quarter mile. Having over 800bhp to the rear wheels, coupled with high performance suspension and a recalibrated DCT transmission, this car can certainly move. And while we don’t know quite how light this car is, we know Shelby has gone the extra mile, fitting thinner glass of all things.
Vince LaViolette, Shelby American’s VP of Operations and head of R&D told Top Gear: “The 2020 Shelby GT500 is truly amazing in stock configuration, but we wanted to explore its pure acceleration capabilities, so we worked closely with Ford Performance and other partners to create the ultimate ‘weapon of track destruction’ in the quarter mile.”
Unfortunately, there aren’t any figures from Shelby on just how fast this car is, but we can expect it to be one hell of a mover, just like the Super Snake F-150 that they’ve also been working on in “response to enthusiast’s requests for a scorching fast street truck”.
With a supercharged V8, it produces 755bhp and sends it through an auto ‘box to the rear wheels. Thankfully, Shelby aren’t stupid, so has equipped it with larger brakes and coilover suspension to ensure it can stop and turn just as well as it can go.
Both of these vehicles are in the early stages of production, with Shelby American big man Gary Patterson “seeking feedback from enthusiasts about the pair, including their thoughts on potential production”. So, if you fancy one of these, I’d think about writing a few emails right now.
