Jack Doohan: Shaping His Path in Formula 1 – A Rising Star’s Journey

Australian Sensation Jack Doohan's Ascent in Formula 1 and His Commitment to Alpine

Jack Doohan, the Australian motorsport hopeful and son of legend Mick Doohan, has made a significant decision regarding his racing career in 2024. Despite receiving numerous offers from various racing formulas, including IndyCar, young Doohan has chosen to dedicate his efforts to a testing and reserve role at Alpine, with his focus squarely on Formula 1.

Initially, Jack Doohan had set his sights on clinching the Formula 2 championship in 2023. His ultimate goal was to make a remarkable leap into the world of Formula 1. However, the beginning of the season did not unfold as planned for the budding Australian talent. This led to a somewhat underwhelming performance, significantly diminishing his chances of securing an immediate F1 seat.

Doohan recently affirmed his current position in a statement to Speedcafe, saying:

“At the moment, I don’t have anything set to race. Had quite a lot of options and in all sub formulas and inside formulas other than Formula 1.

“So not that the opportunities were shy – Super Formula, IndyCar, Hypercar [WEC], whatever it was – I was very fortunate to have those options. However, at this point in time, I feel it’s crucial that I focus only on Formula 1, which is heavily provided by Alpine that I’m able to stay within a car.”

Alpine’s initial plans revolved around placing Doohan in their World Endurance Championship (WEC) team, where he would have been teammates with another rising star, Mick Schumacher. This opportunity in the World Endurance Championship is one that many drivers would covet. However, at the age of 20, Jack Doohan has opted for a different trajectory. He prefers to continue refining his skills and contributing to the Alpine team in Formula 1, even if it means patiently waiting for his moment to shine.

In parallel, Mick Schumacher, a name synonymous with racing excellence, will continue his role as a test and reserve driver for the Mercedes Formula 1 team. He remains ever-ready to step in should Lewis Hamilton or George Russell be unable to compete.

Born on January 20, 2003, Jack Doohan has emerged as a prominent figure in the realm of Formula 2 racing. Standing tall at 183 cm, Doohan faced initial challenges during his rookie season in Formula 3, where he struggled to secure any points. However, a turning point in his career came with his switch to the Trident team. In this new environment, he experienced a breakthrough year, claiming victory in four races and securing an impressive seven podium finishes. This outstanding performance solidified his position as Dennis Hauger’s primary rival for the championship, ultimately earning him the title of vice-champion.

It is worth noting that Jack Doohan’s racing journey is significantly influenced by his lineage as the son of Mick Doohan, a legendary five-time Moto GP World Champion. His foray into Formula 2 began in 2021 when he participated in the final two rounds, achieving a top-five finish and a commendable second place in Qualifying. Before his Formula 2 career, Doohan displayed his prowess in various other racing formats, including being a two-time runner-up in the Asian F3 Championship in 2019 and 2020, along with experience in British F4 and Euroformula Open.

In 2023, Doohan took on the role of reserve driver for the Alpine F1 Team, becoming an integral part of the Alpine Academy. His performance in the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship did not go unnoticed, finishing 6th overall while continuing to be an Alpine Academy driver. His racing record prior to this includes participation in a variety of championships, showcasing a diverse and extensive background in motorsports.

At present, Jack Doohan is a valued member of the Invicta Virtuosi Racing team, where he partners with A. Cordeel. In the 2023 Formula 2 season, he has consistently demonstrated impressive form, securing the third spot in the full driver standings with a remarkable 168 points. Recent accomplishments include clinching his third Feature race victory and playing an essential role in the Formula 2 drivers’ participation in F1’s Young Driver Test held in Abu Dhabi. Jack Doohan’s journey in the world of motorsport is a testament to the fusion of inherited talent and unwavering personal determination, establishing him as a significant talent in the realm of racing.
