James May has recently released his new travel show to Prime Video, and while doing the interview rounds for Our Man In Italy, The Grand Tour presenter has admitted that he doesn’t believe retirement is too far away.
James May: Our Man In italy, follows the presenter as he discovers what makes Italy so good, or rather, how the country’s people are seeking “la dolce vita”. But while talking to the Radio Times Magazine, he admits that retirement isn’t too “far off”.
“I don’t know if it’s because I had a nice time in Italy, or because I’m getting older, or because I’m sick of admin.
“A very close friend of mine died a few weeks ago. He retired early, because he’d always had this fear that his family isn’t very long-lived, and he wanted to swap possessions for experiences and knowledge.”
He continued, adding that this was cut short for his friend after he died.
“That’s what he started doing, but unfortunately he got cancer and it killed him.
“It was quite interesting thinking about that after he’d gone because it takes a certain amount of courage to say, ‘No, I don’t want to telegraph my success and my sophistication. I simply want to have a nice life and contemplate the mystery and wonder of God’s creation.'”
The interviewer continued to ask about the idea of retirement:
“It’s something I’m quietly contemplating, and I suspect it’s not far off,” the ex-Top Gear presenter admitted.
James May, alongside Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson, has just returned from filming the next Grand Tour special through Central Europe. But while they’re keeping this one under wraps from the media, James instead talked about an episode they filmed much earlier this year in and around Norway.
“We’ve already filmed one – we’re not long back from that. We’re ready to go off and do another, and they are huge missions to go and do.”
