The Hillcimb Run Wasn’t Supposed To Happen Says Hammond

In an interview between The Grand Tour Director Phil Churchward, Mate Rimac, and Richard Hammond, Hammond let slip a piece of information that made me wonder if he is in fact psychic. But it also made me feel sorry for him. Let’s just say it takes a lot to get the perfect shot when it comes to film making.

He said once he’d finished what he thought was the last run of the day on the Swiss Hillclimb course, his director contacted him through his radio asking him to do one final run.

He replied to Phil, “ah Phil, you’re making me do this, you know this is the one I’m going to crash on.”

Little did he know that he was in fact right, and the run he thought would go horribly wrong, did in fact go horribly wrong.

Of course, and I’m sure I don’t need to say this, there is no blame whatsoever when it comes to this horrific accident. That’s exactly what it is – an accident. It happens.

From an analysis of the run, Mate Rimac found that Hammond had been incrementally increasing the speed he took the corner he finally crashed on each run.

He said the crash was caused by the car going too fast – it didn’t have enough road – and when Hammond steered to the left, the car pointed itself in that direction by inducing oversteer.

Thankfully, as can be seen in the interview held by DriveTribe, Hammond is good and well! Thank goodness. You can watch that interview below!

Alex started racing at a young age so certainly knows his way around a car and a track. He can just about put a sentence together too, which helps. He has a great interest in the latest models, but would throw all of his money at a rusty old French classic and a 300ZX. Contact: alex@grandtournation.com
