Original 1968 Bullitt Ford Mustang Becomes The Most Expensive Mustang Ever Sold
We recently filled you in on the original 1968 Ford Mustang GT that was used in the classic Steve McQueen movie Bullitt that was heading to auction this month. Well, the results are in, and the iconic muscle car has sold for $3.74 million, including buyer’s premium, making it the most expensive Mustang ever sold.
The car was the hero of what many consider to be the first modern-day car chase. It was one of two cars used for filming the scene, with this specific car being used for the majority and driven by Steve McQueen himself on camera.
It boasts a number of modifications (which were carried across to the new special edition Bullitt), including a removal of all the badges, a black grille, and purposefully ages paint. It was also modified to produce more power and a better sound, and its exterior houses a number of points where the filming crew mounted cameras.
After the film it was sold to an employee of Warner Bros., Robert Ross who used it as a daily driver. In 1970, it was sold to Detective Frank Marranca, who later sold the car for only $6,000 to Robert Kiernan in 1974. It was placed into a garage where it sat with 65,000 miles until it was restored partly in 2001 by Kiernan and his son until it was eventually released to the public at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show.
