The New Land Cruiser Namib Is Everything The Defender Wasn’t
It’s far to say that a few of you weren’t overly happy with the direction that Land Rover took the new 2020 Defender. If that’s you, then you very well might like what we’re about to show you. This is the Land Cruiser Namib, it’s new – despite its looks – and you can buy one today.
While specifically built for South Africa, this Land Cruiser may also make its way to America to be enjoyed by those who like a simpler 4×4. Based on the ’79 Land Cruiser, it’s powered by a 4.5-litre diesel V8, delivering 202hp and 317lb-ft torque. That doesn’t sound like much, but it’s plenty to take the car through most off-roading scenarios, especially as this power is of course sent to all four wheels by a 5-speed ‘box with low range.
Local specialists have got on the suspension, too, meaning it’s perfectly up for a good thrashing. And you don’t have to worry about the exterior because it’s archaic like the 4x4s of old. It has a heavy duty front bumper, headlight protectors, and a snorkel if you find yourself stuck in some high water.
Inside the double-cab is similar. Minus the standard new-car-touch screen, it’s all hard-wearing plastics and chunky buttons. But behind its utilitarian skin, it’s got a clever cooled glovebox, special seat covers with re-enforced bolsters, and a fancy overhead console with LED lights and storage for a two-way radio.
Prices start at around £50,000 depending on where you’re buying it from, but I’m sure many may choose it over the updated and tech-savvy Defender.
I really hope Toyota FINALLY brings the real Toyota Stateside! But, what about a wagon version?!
Now that’s a freaking amazing truck! Sadly, if it was sold in the US, the shitty automotive journalists and Jalopnik readers would bash it for being too “old school/dated looking”.
When can I have one with US drive specs in red or white

When, where, how? Have money will pay!!!
There’s no way this is coming to america
When can the USA market get a hold of one of these? Can we actually purchase a right hand drive and import that in? I am currently part of the Toyota family and this is exactly what I’m looking for. Simple. Straight forward workhorse with minimal footprint.
Take my money I love it!
Will it be available in the US?
I agree! This is awesome! It’s way cooler than the new Discovery. I love the old Land Cruisers. I’m guessing Toyota is getting tired of losing out on business to that company in Miami that restores old LCs & charges an ABSOLUTE MINT for them!
I’m curious, why would you want RHD in America?
I just fell in love… The new Defender is a horrid little Jelly Bean of SUV. And I have driven Land Rovers since I had a license.
This Toyota, however, may be the most beautiful pickup truck I’ve seen since the Jeep J-10 Honcho pickup of the ’70s!
And the best part… it will be arriving in the USA Just about the same time I am due a new truck! It will be my first Toyota. And since you can’t kill a HiLux… it may even be my last!!
