Toyota Corolla Drives 100 Miles Autonomously With One Simple Upgrade
It seems as though everyone is trying to board the autonomous driving train. Tesla is spouting news left, right and centre regarding their vehicles, as are companies like Google and Uber. But what do you believe?
Let’s face it, we’re pretty close to getting autonomy on most cars. I recently had a Citroen C5 Aircross presser, and that was able to stay in lane, slow down to a stop, and accelerate again with traffic under its own steam. So how do we take the next step?
The next step may not be complete autonomy, it might in fact be how easily this ‘almost autonomous’ level of technology can be rolled out to production cars, and a piece of kit called Openpilot by Comma AI may be the way to improve this. Their system was fitted to a Toyota Corolla. See how well it performs on this 100-mile time-lapse (see below).
I must stress that this isn’t complete autonomy. Openpilot simply “enables your car to steer, accelerate and brake automatically within its lane”. While it’s in operation, the driver must be as aware as they’d be fi they were driving without the system, this isn’t an excuse to get some kip!
To install this system, first of all you must install an EON DevKit into your vehicle. From there, you must install the open source software from Comma. Unfortunately, the kit costs $599, an your car must be compatible. v
