Watch the McMurtry Speirling Break the 1/4 Mile Record in all its Electric Glory
The McMurtry Speirling was a highlight of this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it set a record time on the course’s hill climb with a stunning 39.08 seconds. The team behind the vehicle has been hard at work developing a production version. CarWow recently had the opportunity to test drive the prototype, and the results were impressive.
According to the McMurty website, the company “invents, engineers and develops electric vehicles to challenge conventions surrounding the automotive industry.”
The video posted to the CarWow YouTube channel shows the presenter, Mat, take the Speirling out on a damp track, but even under these conditions the car was able to demonstrate impressive acceleration. The prototype had the same gearing as the model used at Goodwood, it had a maximum speed of 150 mph (241 km/h).
Later, Mat took the car out to test it on a dry circuit where it clocked an insane 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of 1.4 seconds and reached 100 mph (161 km/h) in just 2.63 seconds. The most impressive figure, however, was the car’s ability to cover 1,312 feet (400 meters) in just 7.97 seconds, which is just short of a quarter-mile.
The Speirling is equipped with two electric motors that drive the rear wheels, and produces 1,000 horsepower. The car is fitted with a 60-kilowatt-hour battery pack that provides a range of 300 miles (261 km) according to the WTLP estimate.
The Speirling also has a pair of fans that create 4,409 pounds (2,000 kg) of downforce, ensuring that there is always plenty of traction even through low-speed corners.

They also reveal in the video caption that the McMurtry Speirling comes with a hefty price tag. They wrote:
“Now, of course, all that power and performance doesn’t come cheap, costing just under £2,000,000. But if the car can break records as it claims, then it’s got to be worth it, right?”
