Audi Teases The Return Of The Manual Gearbox In Recent Tweet

There’s no way about it, the manual gearbox will soon only reside in the history books. In fact, in some parts of the world (I’m looking at you, America), a lot of people already class a car that has flappy paddles as ‘manual’. That’s s wrong it hurts. But hey, while the world has been launched into panic, let’s take solace in the fact that Audi has hinted at the possibility of the manual ‘box returning.

Audi’s Twitter account posted a photo of a manual gear lever alongside the following: “The lost art of deciding which gear you’re in. #40YearsOfquattro”.

The message seemed to be well received with the post collecting over 1,500 likes and almost 200 retweets. Replies to the post included hashtags such as ‘save the manual’, so it obviously struck a chord. Unfortunately, Audi is selling very few cars with a manual transmission such as the 2021 A1 and A3. A DSG gearbox is also available. I’m hoping this teaser from the German company could see the return of a manual gearbox to either a new sports car, or a special edition for an existing model.

BMW has also hinted at a manual gearbox for future M cars, so let’s hope fans of the stick shift make some noise, starting here.
