New Toyota GR86 Launching July 2021 According To Leak
Rumours of the new Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ’s launch date are circulating once again, with this specific possibility originating from an alleged insider known by Motor1. It claims that the new models could be arriving as soon as July 2021.
According to the website, they received a photo of an internal Toyota presentation that reveals details of the new sports car, one of them being a name change. The newly dubbed GR86 is set to launch in less than 18 months for the ’22 model year, and we assume the Subaru variant will launch alongside it, too.
From the information we’ve collected, we understand that these new cars will be based on Toyota’s TNGA chassis, and the 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine will be replaced by a turbocharged unit of 2.4-litres capacity from Subaru’s Legacy, Outback, and Ascent. With the engine already in production in the aforementioned models, it currently produces 260 hp and 277 lb-ft, but thanks to the tunability of forced induction, it could be producing more in its sports car guise.
With the new 2.0-litre Supra only recently revealed, we’re interested to see how Toyota differentiates between the two similar sports cars. A major differentiating factor will be its transmission, with the Supra yet to be available with a manual ‘box. Only a ZF 8-speed automatic is currently available. The current GT86 still holds onto its clutch pedal, and we expect this theme to carry on to the upcoming models.
